Screening of “Cartoonists: Foot Soldiers of Democracy” – March 27-28 [fr]

The Reel Artists Film Festival is the only film festival in North America to focus exclusively on documentaries about contemporary art. RAFF presents a selection of international feature-length and short documentaries that address topics and challenges present in today’s art world.

For 2015, RAFF, which will take place from March 26 to 28, will screen Toronto Premiere Cartoonists: Foot Soldiers of Democracy on March 27 at 6 pm and on March 28 at 8:15 pm at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Director Stéphanie Valloatto investigates, in this ominously timed documentary, 12 international artists who risk everything for freedom of expression. The story will be keenly felt as a grim portent of the tragic events at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. Political cartoonists occupy a space that is fraught with risk—of censorship, backlash and physical harm—and create provocative work with the goal of eliciting a response. This documentary provides an in-depth look at the unique position these artists occupy.
