Fête de la musique - June 21, 2012 [fr]

To mark its 8th year in Toronto, Fête de la musique is taking over the streets of Kensington Market! In keeping with the spirit of this global celebration of music, which originated in France in 1982 and is now held in over 100 countries, Fête de la Musique returns to its busking roots!

The 2012 edition, organized by the Alliance française de Toronto, will take place on Thursday, June 21 on Augusta Avenue, between College and Oxford. The street will be closed to traffic the day of the occasion, and the party will begin at 2:00 pm, with musicians performing outside until 8:00 pm. Then, from 8:00 to 11:00 pm, we’ll take the party indoors, as the Waterfalls (303 Augusta Avenue) will host three amazing Toronto bands.

The artists

For this year’s edition, we have concocted an incredibly varied musical menu: folk, Gypsy jazz, klezmer, classical music, celtic harp, blues, cuban songs, choirs and even a brass band! So no matter what your tastes lean towards, there will be something to make your toes tap and your heart sing!

Over 30 musicians will perform in the five spaces between College and Oxford, including many established local artists and a number of subway virtuosos who’ll emerge from the Toronto underground, instruments in hand, to take over the Market! Also, in keeping with the democratic and popular mandate of Fête de la Musique, they will be joined by a contingent of young amateur musicians, many of whom will come from various Toronto schools for the occasion. In the evening, the Waterfalls restaurant and bar will host Karo, a Gypsy jazz group, local folk band The Benefit of a Free Man, as well as Fred Spek’s Camp Combo, well known to Toronto audiences.

Our partners

The 8th Toronto edition of Fête de la Musique is the result of a parnership between Alliance Française de Toronto and the Kensington Market BIA, who also organize the immensely popular pedestrian Sundays. Also on board are the Fondation franco-ontarienne, the Office of Francophone Affairs, the Centre francophone and Radio-Canada, the event’s official media partner.
