Sylvain Estibal presents “When Pigs Have Wings” – April 18 and 21, 2013 [fr]
From April 11 to 21 2013, the Toronto Jewish Film Festival presents films from all around the world, including the French film “When Pigs Have Wings” by Sylvain Estibal, winner of the César Award 2012 for the Best First Film. Invited in partnership with the Consulate general of France in Toronto, French director Sylvain Estibal and actress Myriam Tekaïa will answer questions from the audience after the two screenings: on Thursday, April 18 at 6 pm at the Cineplex Odeon Sheppard and on Sunday, April 21 at 3:15 pm at Bloor Hot Docs.
Down-on-his-luck fisherman Jafaar can’t catch a break (let alone a fish). He owes money to the local shopkeeper and has to confront his wife’s disappointment on a daily basis. Matters take a turn for the worse when a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig gets caught up in one of his fishing nets. Deemed impure by both Jews and Muslims alike, the pig must be gotten rid of, but that is easier said than done. Sasson Gabai (The Band’s Visit, Restoration) delivers a pitchperfect performance as the hapless fisherman. This gentle comedy from France never loses sight of its core message of peace and understanding.
