Paris-Toronto: Olivier Bosson in residence – Oct 8-21 [fr]


As part of Burbs to Banlieues, a Franco-Canadian programme curated by Catherine Sicot, French artists Julia Varga and Olivier Bosson have been invited to be in residence in Toronto by Elegoa Cultural Productions in partnership with Ryerson School of Image Arts and Le Labo as part of the Paris-Toronto series coordinated by the Consulate General of France in Toronto with support from the Institut français.

Off the Edge – Burbs to Banlieues takes place in the suburbs of Paris and Toronto. It aims at exploring links and differences between territories marked by layers of histories and dreams, in geographies where significant colonial histories and current immigration come into play. The project offers artists based in both countries a context to develop new artworks in the other country.

Participating France-based artists in Canada are experimental film and documentary makers Julia Varga and Olivier Bosson. Julia Varga has recently created a work in Aubervilliers (north of Paris) and is currently editing a film shot in the suburb of Cairo. Olivier Bosson has worked extensively in French suburbs including Lyon’s.

Olivier Bosson is the second artist in residence in Toronto as part of the residency programme Burbs to Banlieues.
From October 8 to 21, Olivier Bosson will develop his researches, in partnership with Elegoa and Jamii, in the Esplanade area in Toronto for his project « Zoom » (temporary title) and will shot in Toronto a chapter of his project ‘forum des rêves’. This participatory fiction offers the possibility to broadcast his dreams on his mobile phone to watch them, upload them and share them on the forum. The show runs through individual dreams and the great contemporary dreams. During the first week of the residency, casting will be organized.



October 10 at 7:30 pm: Public presentation at the Ryerson Converge Student Lecture Series, Ryerson University, 122 Bond Street (room IMA 307). We are the audience: Olivier Bosson will give an overview of his art practice that includes both filmmaking and performance, that has to do with his large interest for amateurs’ practices. Presentation will be followed by a Q&A with the artist at 9:00 pm at the Imperial Pub, 54 Dundas Street East..

October 15 - noon to 3 pm: Casting for the project “Forum des rêves” at Dovercourt House, 805 Dovercourt Rd, 3rd floor. Thank you to CORPUS for providing space.

October 15 - 6 to 9 pm: Workshop at Le Labo (in French) “Cinéma échelle 1:1, autofilmage et fiction” focusing on the use of the CAM.

October 16 - 1 to 3 pm: Casting for the project “Forum des rêves” at Centre d’accueil Heritage, 33 Hahn Place (on The Esplanade)

October 16 – 6 to 9 pm: Casting for the project “Forum des rêves” at Le Labo.

October 17, 18, 19: Shooting of the “Forum des rêves” with francophone participants.

Olivier Bosson was trained at Fresnoy, Studio National des Arts Contemporains, from 2002 to 2004. His work since mainly consists in directing movies and artistic performances. These two approaches influence and feed each other, and are emerging practices and specific problems. He wrote a short book, mixing thoughts and short stories “L’échelle 1 1, pour les performances conférences et autres live” (Ed La riponne), in which he presents theirs issues and motivations.

In recent years, he achieved a lot of works widely distributed, fictional and choral movies notably featuring a lot of non-professional actors: ‘200%’ (2010), fictional movie shot in the suburbs of Lyon, codirected with Nicolas Boone (first presentation at FID, Marseille, ‘Le stop le soir’ (2011) shot in Dordogne, and The possession Forum (2011), a pilot for the web TV Edenroc.

Following the good reception of the pilot, he currently works on a TV show version of the Forum: ‘Le Forum des Rêves’, a TV show in French language, in 10 episodes shot in a dozens of cities.
