French Jazz band Laurent Coq Trio in Toronto – October 17 [fr]
For the first event of its 2014-2015 Jazz programing, the Alliance française de Toronto hosts Laurent Coq Trio on Friday, October 17 at 8pm.
Since 2004, this French jazz trio with Creole accent, critically acclaimed in Europe, will offer music with influences from New York and the Caribbean. Dialogue is pianist-composer Laurent Coq’s eighth album. This time, he presents himself as a duo piano/guitar –a highly demanding orchestration– that turns into an atypical trio with the addition of vocal on half of the repertoire.
It is the discovery of guitarist Ralph Lavital who was his student in composition at Edim –and through him singer Nicolas Pelage– that motivated this new musical adventure. These two young musicians from Caribbean descent (French West-Indies) have been a tremendous source of inspiration for the elaboration of an entirely original repertoire that fuses New York and Caribbean influences. They just came back from a five weeks tour in Southern Africa and Indian Ocean.
